The Urban Water Security Research Alliance (UWSRA) was formed in 2007 as a $50 million partnership over five years between the Queensland Government, CSIRO’s Water for a Healthy Country Flagship, Griffith University and The University of Queensland. The Alliance was formed to address South East Queensland’s (SEQ) emerging urban water issues with a focus on water security and recycling during a period of extreme drought. The program aimed to deliver new research capacity to SEQ tailored to tackling existing and anticipated future issues to inform the implementation of the Government’s Water Strategy.
- SEQ water utilities;
- the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence;
- Water Quality Research Australia;
- the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA); and
- Cooperative Research Centres.
The program brought new research capacity to SEQ, tailored to addressing current and anticipated future risks, assumptions and uncertainties facing water supply strategy.
- alternative supply sources such as rainwater and stormwater, water use efficiency and demand management behavioural measures to reduce demand on the SEQ Water Grid;
- the nature and level of risk to human health from a range of source waters within the SEQ; and
- enhanced management efficiencies and integrated water planning and management to transform to a smart water region.
